Final Post Overview

Overview
            For the past eight weeks, my intention has been to progressively improve my writing in English 102. At the beginning of the semester, I was horrible at everything, including applying my literary theory to the writings that I had written about in the earliest part of the eight week class. My papers were badly punctuated and written in the early weeks of my English class. After writing and rewriting various papers and getting feedback from other people in the class I improved on my grammar and application of my literary theory. I have learned a lot over the past eight weeks from taking this class that I hope will assist me in future classes that I take.
            I have learned so much in the past eight weeks of taking this class. I learned that there is more than just one search method to obtaining information on a particular subject. I had no idea about a search engine called dogpile that uses three popular search engines put together. I used and published blog post and how to write one. I learned how to properly apply a literary theory to certain topic when writing. I never knew really what a mashup was until I took this class. I gained better knowledge about what kind of technologies there are to research with.     
 When the semester started in May, I thought we were going to be writing about topic that were presented to us, but instead of doing that I was introduced to a new type of writing method that I had never heard of before. In all honesty, I was not happy about most of the literary theory’s that were presented on the handout that was given to me. The only two theories that I liked were the psychoanalytical theory and the historical theory; the others irritated me. I had trouble thinking about how to apply the other theories.  When I first started to apply the literary theory, I thought that I was supposed to answer all of the questions about the specific theory that we were using in our writings. In my early writing Symbolic Imagery, I really had no idea what to do in order to implement my literary theory into a piece of writing. My punctuation and grammar were poorly shown in my first blog post on Blake’s poem. In Metamorphosis psycho analysisI seldom improved on my implication of my literary theory, but I had made better progress on my grammar and implication of my literary theory.
            As time passed by, I learned that I was using invalid sources for my research papers like in re-post of film vs. written work. Also in this paper, I was improving on my grammar and on applying my literary theory. In my Kafka’s written work vs. Carlos’s film blog I started to get a little better at my grammar and implication of my literary theory but not to the point of mastering completely how to write a literary theory paper.  In my very last blog post dance and music I improved a little more than when I first started the class. My grammar and literary implication topics improved slowly as the weeks passed.  I believe I progressively improved my writing, although there is still room for improvement.
            In conclusion, my experience from the class has been rewarding and full of challenges that have tested my writing skills so much that I realized that I needed to improve my grammar and literary theory implication. I know I don’t deserve an A in the class or even a B, but I think that I deserve at least a C for improving somewhat in my writing and participating in all of the activities that were presented before all of us.

Music and Dance

                                                            Music and Dance
               
                Throughout history, music has served as a form of entertainment during times of war and peace. The music is often accompanied by food, festivities, and—more importantly—dancing.  The video, The Evolution of Dance, shows how dance has changed through the years with a mashup of music. The video shows many songs and dancing styles that were prominent from 1956 to 2004. The Evolution of Dance gives a historical variety of song and dance that many people have moved to.  
       
                Since the beginning of recorded time music has played an important role in our daily lives. During times of celebration, joyful music has been played to express man feelings of happiness for a certain occasion. Music has also been used in times of mourning; some examples would include funeral songs and requiems. Music is the audible manifestation of human emotion. Through the music a person is listening to, we can gauge how a person is feeling at a certain point of time, although we should not be quick to judge how one is feeling when he or she is listening to a song that presents a certain emotion to the listener. Celebratory music is often accompanied by dancing. In the video, The Evolution of Dance many genres music are both played and observed in the video. Music has been accompanied by dancing for as long as music has been around.
             
               In the evolution of dance video, Judson uses a conglomeration of different genres: such as hip hop/rap, pop, rock and roll, and country, among others. The first song “Hound Dog” by Elvis Presley was made in 1956 around the time when rock and roll was a brand new type of genre. Rock and roll has since been a large part of American culture. “Thriller” by Michael Jackson was the peak of pop music in the 1980’s. Michael Jackson’s dance that was performed in his thriller video revolutionized the way people move to music. “Cotton eyed Joe” by The Rednex is an example of country music that is incorporated with a particular style of dance. Hip hop/rap made is breakthrough during the 2000’s: such examples include Jay-Z’s “Dirt off Your Shoulder”, “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, and “Hay Ya!” By Outkast. Hip hop/rap is an upbeat type of genre that involves fast pace dance movements.
               
                In conclusion music has played in peoples live for century. Dance is often incorporated with the music as a form of entertainment or fun. Without song and dance many people would not be able to express how they are felling in times of mourning and celebration. As music has developed so has the way it is preformed and sung throughout time. Historically man has been obsessed with experimenting and creating new rhythms and styles of songs and dances in order to satisfy our craving for new forms of entertainment. Only time will tell what new music we will create or hear.

Kafka's written work vs. Carlos's film

Movie vs. Written Work
“The Metamorphosis” is both a movie and a written story about a traveling sales man who was transformed into a giant insect which made him physically unable to care for his family. I will be describing and giving examples of his ordeal in both the film and written work.  The metamorphosis film which was made in 1993 by carols had many differences compared to Kafka’s 1915 original written story. Many film producers do not stick to what the original story line was in their film that they make, even Carlos added a couple of changes to his version of the metamorphosis. The film did give a more visual feeling of what Gregor’s ordeals were and how deeply they affected him (wikapedia ).
Both the film and the movie have their similarity and differences like for example in the story Gregor’s was transformed into a giant insect, while in the film he was transformed into a half human half insect monster. The similarities in both works are few for example, the time that both of the stories took place. In Carlos’s film it took place during Hitler’s rise to power, were as Kafka’s took place many years before that happened. Carlos’s film painted a more terrible ordeal of fear when in the film Gregor’s family was Jewish and had lost their bread winner but, what made  their ordeals more desperate and stressful was when a Nazi showed up at their front door. In Kafka’s written version Gregor’s inability to communicate was one of his greatest ordeals that he endured in Kafka’s written work. For Gregor to have no ability to speak or communicate made his ordeal more depressing, even thought he could not communicate Gregor could still understand what his family members were saying about him and their true intentions on what to do with Gregor. From Breckman’s theory Gregor’s inability to speak came from his detachment to his humanity (Breckmen). In both the movie and film Gregor developed an appetite for rotten food given to him by his sister. Gregor’s depressing and sad state made him so weak and miserable that he had no desire to walk out of his room because he was afraid of what his family might do or think of him if he were to leave his room.
In both the film and movie Gregors ordeals had psychologically affection his human aspect of thinking, including his sleepless nights and constant thinking. His sleepless nights of constant thinking drove him insane the same thought ran thought his mind nonstop “what has happened to me” (Breckmen). In Carlos’s film there was no scene that showed Gregor was constantly thinking and pondering the question about what he has become and why . Gregor was worried about his job when he realized that he could never return to work in his condition but, when he realized that the company sent someone to find out what was up with his absence Gregor realized that his job would be lost. In the movie no such scene showed that he was concerned about his job. Gregor was worried about his family and their financial security; the thought of his family losing their security that he provides for them drove him crazy and insane.
The loss of Gregor’s humanity stressed his parents emotionally and financially in both the film and written story. If there were more similarities in the movie and story it would be in the emotional reaction from his family members. In both the movie and written story Gregors is falsely accused of attacking his mother and is cased down by his father being pelted with apples that were thrown by his frustrated and angry father that has lost all hope of ever getting his human son back. In the film Gregor is being hit with apples on the roof of their house, while in the story he is being pelted with apples in the kitchen (Carlos’s film). Gregors mother was still hoping that her son would return to normal but at the end of both film and movie her hopes would be cursed when Gregors passes away. Her love for her son was so great that she pleaded with her daughter to take her to see her son but, each time she left to see Gregor she would pass out or faint because of what her son looked like. In the movie that was shown more often and frequent than in the written work.
In conclusion both film and written work show and demonstrate both similarities and differences between each other’s psychological aspects of the written work and film. The film gave a more modern and dramatic feelings about what Gregors ordeals were in the film story. The written work presented more detail about what was Gregors thinking during the time that he was an insect to the time of his death.

Film vs. Original Written Work

Film vs. Original Written Work
I first read Shakespeare’s written drama a midsummer night’s dream with a vague image of what the story had told, but after reading it a second time it was more clear that from a feminist analysis that most women did not have very much say to whom they wanted to merry. Ed Fraiman’s modern day film that re tells the story of a midsummer night’s dream gave a more visual and in depth look at the roles of women and their relationships. Both written play and film focus on relationships and the love that the male and female characters had for one another. From a feminist analysis female and male roles are defined in the written play and the film.
In the play Hermia is forced to marry Demetrious, but Hermia loves Lysander while Helena is still in love with Demetrious. Hermia in both the film and the written drama represents a strong independent woman who will not be forced to do something that she does not want to do. Hermia bound and determined to not be forced to do want she feels is not right in her heart ran away with Lysander the one she truly loved. Hermia knew what she wanted and what she had to do in order for her to be with her one true love. In the time that Shakespeare wrote this story, woman were to submit to their husbands or their fathers every order but in this story Hermia’s disobedience to her father’s demands made Egeus (the father)look like a bad father figure who did not rise his daughter to submit to a man’s authority. In the drama Hermia’s parents were both upset that she had run away with another man but in the film only the father was upset with Hermia. In both film and written drama the wife was angry with the husband for forcing Hermia to marry Demetrious; she blames him for her rebelling against her father’s word for running away. For some reason in the film the parents’ names and story line were altered from the original written drama. The film has small changes to it that do not match up to the exact story line of the original written work. In The time that Elizabeth was queen there was a common mindset that men were born to lead the house hold and that women were born to take care of the house and the children. It was believed to men were more intelligent and that women would need to marry in order for someone to look after them.
Helena’s part in the drama struck me as desperate and abused, in both the film and written drama Helena was engaged to Demetrious before he was to marry Hermia.  Helena was so insecure to ask for Demetrious’s love that she instead followed him.  Helena was still in love with Demetrious, she followed him even though Demetrious had abused her verbally and physically. I am your spaniel; and Demetrius, The more you beat me, I will fawn on you: Use me but as your spaniel, spurn me, strike me, Neglect me, lose me; only give me leave, Unworthy as I am to follow you.
(II.i.203-207).
this situation leaves little for Helena to be a admiral women for feminist. In the play Helena is the example of a woman who is mocked for her sad and desperate attachment towards Demetrious were in the story she all of a sudden forgives Demetrious for his mistreatment towards her. In the film Helena is no longer insecure she is angry and aware of what a brut Demetrious has been towards her. In the film Demetrious is the one who comes to Helena and apologizes and asks form her love to him.
The fairy queen Titania is one of the most strongest and mischievous characters in both the film and written drama. She hold so much power that she has her own army under her command; why should she submit to Oberon’s constant demand for the Indian child. She inflicts her own sleep and in this venerability is entrusted to the protection of one inept guard who is overtaken by Oberon with menial effort on the god’s part. After being put under the love potions spell she falls in love with a donkey man. When Oberon get the child he lifts the spell of the queen. It’s ironic that this play was written and displayed publically in the Elizabeth era; a time in English history when a woman controlled and ruled the throne.
Both film and written drama are similar in more ways that they are different. Titania the character almost fits the role that Queen Elizabeth represented in England. Compared to today the roles of women have come a long way compared to the rule of Elizabeth. Both the roles of men and women are expressed in Shakespeare play a midsummer night’s dream. The film shows that the roles have changed to a more equal and free life than what it was during the Elizabeth era.
